Basic history:
Remus Lupin never expected to be allowed to go to Hogwarts. He knew he was different in a strange and terrible way. He simply wasn't safe to be around other children. Bu Albus Dumbledore, Headmaster of Hogwarts, found a way to allow him to come despite his issues, and to keep him safe while at school. His only request was that Remus not tell any of the other students.
At first, this was no problem. Sorted into Gryffindor, he did his best to keep himself apart from the other students. But his dorm-mates, Sirius Black, James Potter, and Peter Pettigrew, soon figured out his secret. After all, there were only so many times he could make excuses as to his odd disappearances each month. But instead of turning on him, the three became his confidants, and found a way to make his transformation into a werewolf each month easier--they studied and became animagi.
They were his closest friends, and he denied them nothing. Even when he knew they were in the wrong. But things changed when Remus, doing a sweep of the grounds for his Prefects' duties, ran into one of his friends' brothers--Regulus Black. The boy was different from his friends. More closed off, which was no surprise, given the fact that his brother had run away from home only a few months before. Not to mention the fact that he was a Slytherin. But Remus couldn't deny that there was something to the other boy.
He tried to avoid him, knowing that Sirius would never approve, but he found himself going to meet Regulus more and more as time went on. It was only when Sirius learned about their attraction that Remus began to avoid Regulus, and was grateful when his schooling was finally over so that he could stay away from temptation.
He regretted it soon enough, when he learned of Regulus's disappearance, blaming himself for leaving Regulus alone with only the other Slytherins for company. It was his guilt that caused the rift between he and James and Sirius, allowing Peter to whisper lies into their ears to make them believe Remus was the traitor, and causing the ultimate conclusion to the Potter's tragedy, and to his own betrayal.
Left without lovers or friends after the death of the Potters, Remus completely cut himself off from the world for more than ten years, doing only as much as he needed to survive, and that barely. It was only the news of Sirius's escape from Azkaban and the missive from Dumbledore that pulled him from his depression, and back into the world once more.
Learning of Sirius's innocence that year helped to keep Remus focused on the real world once more, and with Voldemort's return, he soon found himself taking an active part in the war against him.
Alone with Sirius, he rekindled their friendship, and soon learned that there was more to his friend's anger over Remus's one-time relationship with his brother--Sirius had wanted Remus for himself. The two started up a tentative romance, only to find it cut short by the attack on the Ministry.
Alone again, Remus felt lost once more. Only the tasks that Dumbledore set for him seemed to break through the haze. Until he learned of Sirius's cousin's interest in him. Though he'd dated few girls--and little more men--Remus decided to give her a chance, hoping to find himself again. It was a mistake. It was too soon after Sirius's death, and too much was going on, and he found himself rushed to the altar when Tonks informed him he was soon to be a father.
He struggled with himself over the next few months. Tonks surely deserved someone who would be able to love her, but she continued to insist he was the only one for her. It was only the birth of their son, and the impending final battle that calmed Remus, settling him into what little time he thought remained to him. His last wish was that his son would live a happy life, and insisted his wife and her mother remain behind to guard him and to get him from the country should the final battle fail.
When Tonks appeared, Remus was horrified. She had a whole life to lead. Their son to protect. But she insisted that she was an Auror, and needed to be here, and to stand by his side. And when the final blow came, even Remus himself could not protect her.
He was never sure how he managed to escape. The healers said they found him in the pile of the dead, moaning softly. Some speculated that it had been his curse that saved him, werewolf blood making it nearly impossible to kill him. Whatever it was, Remus found himself alone once more.
And yet not. For now, he had a son to raise. He focused all his energies on Teddy, letting himself get lost in the basics of learning how to cope with an infant.
His life changed again with a shocking sequence of events. No one knew how the curtain worked, but suddenly one day, Sirius appeared on the other side of the curtain, pale and odd, but whole, and conscious. Harry was the first person called. Remus was the second. Once Sirius was released from the hospital, they tried to restart their interrupted romance, but found that there was no point. The two had simply not been able to adjust. Still good friends, they continued to spend time together, and it was during one of these visits when the subject of Sirius's brother came up. Thinking it would be safe to admit to his feelings now that they had agreed they were not meant to be together, and with Regulus long-dead, Remus did so. Only to learn that Regulus had reappeared in England.
Barely even aware of what he was doing, Remus hurried to where Sirius had told him Regulus was. He wasn't going to lose him again.
